Himachal Pradesh Himalayan Valleys & Mountain Light

The essence

Himachal Pradesh is not one landscape but five. The Kullu-Manali valley in the south, green with apple orchards and deodar cedar, is accessible year-round. The Spiti Valley in the north — a high-altitude Tibetan plateau in everything but name — is one of India's most otherworldly landscapes, accessible only June to October before the passes close. Shimla, the colonial-era hill station with its Victorian mall and ridge-top views, is a starting point for journeys into the inner ranges. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are home to the Tibetan government-in-exile. And Lahaul — remote, cold, and barely visited — fills the space between them.

Culture & History

The story
behind the place.

Himachal Pradesh's culture shifts dramatically with altitude. In the lower valleys — Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala — the culture is predominantly Hindu with strong Himachali folk traditions: the Kullu Dussehra festival in October, when 300 local deities process to Kullu town, is one of India's most extraordinary. The upper districts of Spiti, Lahaul, and Kinnaur are culturally Tibetan Buddhist, with monasteries predating the Dalai Lama's relocation by centuries. Ki Monastery in Spiti, perched on a conical hill at 4,116 metres, has been functioning since the 11th century. The languages shift with altitude: Pahari in the lower ranges, Tibetan dialects in the upper.
